Experience Bairnsdale
Bairnsdale is the gateway to East Gippsland’s natural beauty. The town sits on the Mitchell River, 285 kilometres east of Melbourne. Once a port for steamboats and traders in the 1850s, it has become the commercial and administrative hub of the East Gippsland Shire. Visitors can enjoy history, arts, culture, and retail all in one place.
You’ll find rich heritage across town, including the rotunda at its centre, the spectacular murals and architecture of St Mary’s Church, and the 19th-century Bairnsdale Courthouse. Bairnsdale’s location gives you easy access to lakes, rivers, mountains, and forests. As a result, it is a perfect destination for year-round enjoyment. Stay in town and enjoy a wide choice of accommodation and dining options. While here, you can plan day trips, tours, or longer escapes.
Take time to wander Main Street’s shops and gardens. Afterward, relax in one of the many cafés and restaurants scattered throughout the town. As you explore, you’ll notice St Mary’s Church standing tall as an icon, adorned with impressive murals by Italian artist Francesco Floreani. To keep the creativity flowing, visit the East Gippsland Art Gallery for stunning exhibitions. For cultural indigenous history and traditional artworks, a visit to Krowathunkoolong Keeping Place museum is a must.
At the eastern end of town, you’ll find another vibrant hub. Here, you can enjoy the all-abilities playground, skate park, Howitt Park reserve, and BMX track. It’s a popular place for families to take a break and let children enjoy many fun activities. Make sure you visit the mighty canoe tree in Howitt Park reserve. This tree holds deep indigenous significance and is a special stop along the Bataluk Cultural Trail.
