East Gippsland Fishing Report For October 2026

Nicholson River fishing

Lakes Entrance

The Surf beaches are landing gummy shark, on high tide, using fresh squid, mullet and tailor. Salmon are still cruising along the coastline, chasing metal slugs. Around the islands for smaller sized salmon biting on soft plastics, great for the kids to have some fun.

Lake Tyers 

Mill Point boat ramp has nice sized bream, trevally are biting on natural coloured soft plastics. Try the faster-flowing areas. Flathead are biting on soft plastics and lures. Bream, taking fresh sandworm are biting in the upper reaches of Nowa Nowa Arm.

Mitchell River

Bream are fishing well from the river mouth through to The Bluff, with local, live sandworm producing the goods. The Cut and lower river are worth a look, particularly around the grassy banks, snags and deeper water.

Tambo River

Good-sized Bream are being caught from Rough Road through to the Highway Bridge at Swan Reach, with live sandworm and local prawns producing the goods. Estuary Perch are also being caught upstream of the Highway Bridge, with Mullet and Luderick also around the lower reaches.

Nicholson River

Bream are the main target, with the stretch between the Highway and the Car Bodies fishing well. Soft-shell crab, cut crab and live sandworm are the pick of the baits. The deeper water and structure around the bridges are also worth a try.

Paynesville/Holland’s Landing

Paynesville town jetties are fishing well for Bream, with soft-shell crab and local prawns producing good results. Around Ocean Grange, Snapper are being caught, while Gummies have been taking soft plastics. For Salmon and Tailor, metal lures are the go.

Metung

Nungurner Jetty is worth a look for Whiting, with local sandworm and pipis producing the goods. Metung’s town jetties and Chinaman’s Creek are fishing well for Bream, with cut crab, soft-shell crab and local prawns the pick of the baits.

Marlo

Bream are moving up the Snowy River. They can also be spotted in the Brodribb River catching local prawn. Try Surf Beaches for Salmon and Tailor.

Bemm River

Decent-sized bream are being caught in the lake with live sandworm. Flathead, trevally and salmon are also in the lake. The entrance is closed.

Mallacoota

 Flathead are on the move, try paddle-tail soft plastics along the edges of the sandy flats. The top lake is abundant with bream, Bass yabbies and prawns are producing some great results for both boat and land-based fishers.

High Country

Nice-sized trout can be found in the rivers, with good numbers of fish showing and readily taking bait, lures and flies.

Recreational Fishing License

A Recreational Fishing Licence is required when fishing in Victoria between the ages of 18-70 years (exemptions apply).
