Hook line and sinker, we’ve got you covered with this August East Gippsland fishing update, packed with expert tips and the best spots from our local guides.
Along the Ninety Mile Beach has salmon chasing metal slugs and stick baits with good results casting into the deeper gutters at dusk or dawn. Bream are still in the system mainly around the structures, flathead are near the channel edges. Trevally are biting off the wharves.
Fishing is slowing down in the lake system, but bream are still around in the deeper waters, taking peeled prawn and blood worms. Try hard bodied minnows for tailor, and around the wooden structures of Toorloo Arm for perch.
Best for Bream are the crabby banks and heading to Eagle Point Bay. For best results try soft shell, cut crab and local Prawn.
Bream are taking live sandworm near the boat ramp and the Log Hole. Also give Tambo Upper Road a go with soft shells, cut crab and plastics.
Best baits to hopefully catch some dinner are shrimp, sandworm and Bass yabbies. Best spots are the swimming holes and the Jetties between the two bridges.
Paynesville/Holland’s Landing
Ocean Grange for Salmon off the Beach, try pilchards and poppers. Try Banksia Peninsula and Duck Arm for Bream. Best baits are local Prawns and Sandworm.
Bream on soft plastics, mainly from land-based angling, estuary perch are also around.
Salmon are still active near the entrance, chasing laser lures and soft plastics. And if you can stand the wind offshore at Cape Conran, gummy shark and flathead are providing consistent action, with bluebait, local squid and fresh fish fillets continuing to produce good results.

Top Lake for Bream and Flathead. Soft shell crab, shrimp and soft plastics have been the standout offerings, producing great results. Surf has been popular for Salmon and Tailor. Pilchards and poppers have been the top choices for chasing these hard-fighting species.
The trout and salmonids season in Vic and NSW rivers and streams is currently closed. The winter closed season runs from Tuesday 9 June to Friday 4 September 2026 (inclusive). The open season for rivers officially begins on Saturday 5 September 2026.

A Recreational Fishing Licence is required when fishing in Victoria between the ages of 18-70 years (exemptions apply).
