Look deeper, seek further
Remote high country townships, outlying hamlets and a whole lot of open countryside in between. Rolling hills as far as the eye can see, dotted with snow in the winter months is a sign of the Alpine National Park and snow resorts of Dinner Plain and Mt Hotham only a breath away.
Approaching the remote towns via the awe inspiring Great Alpine Road leads you straight into historical heritage with gold mining, rustic buildings with architecture envy and colourful lead lit churches.
Omeo
The central area of Omeo township is abundant with times of yesteryear. Walk the streets and admire the buildings which were once thriving with life. Take a walk along Livingstone Creek Walking Track as it meanders from the town to the Oriental Claims Historic Area. This area was once one of the worlds largest gold sluicing operations, but today you will see and learn of the relics. Not only keep your eyes peeled for historical artifacts, as the area is also rich in birdlife, flora and is known for beautiful native orchids.
And now for Omeo's latest trick... an all new, world class Mountain Bike Park! Years in the making, this hip attraction currently features a rad pump track suitable for all abilities and a challenging skills course with historic obstacles and natural terrain elements. Planning is well underway for the staged completion of more than 120km of hugely anticipated mountain biking trails.
Ensure you take advantage of the high country hospitality with some home cooked goodness from one of the local cafes, restaurants or pubs. You will be sure to be satisfied.
Often used as a pit-stop commuting to and from the Alpine resorts, Omeo deserves much more attention than a quick coffee break.
