Lakes Entrance to Buchan Caves
This 3-day Coast to Caves itinerary showcases some of East Gippsland’s most memorable experiences, blending coastal charm, lakeside relaxation, and inland adventure.
Begin in the lively hub of Lakes Entrance, where golden beaches, fresh seafood, and a vibrant café culture set the tone. Just a short drive away, the tranquil village of Lake Tyers invites you to unwind with surf breaks, calm waters for families, and unique dining spots overlooking the lake.
The journey then leads inland to Buchan, home to Victoria’s largest cave system, where striking limestone formations and scenic hiking trails reveal a completely different side of the region.
Breakfast in Lakes Entrance
Morning
Start your day with breakfast at Albert & Co in Lakes Entrance, where you can enjoy locally sourced dishes while overlooking the scenic Cunningham Arm. This stylish café sets a relaxed tone for the day with its warm hospitality and coastal charm.
Honey Shop
Mid-Morning
Heading toward Buchan, make a brief stop at the Nowa Nowa Wombat Honey Shack to pick up 100% natural Australian honey—a sweet taste of the region’s local produce.
Buchan Caves Hotel
Lunch
For lunch, visit the Buchan Caves Hotel, a friendly country pub offering hearty meals in a relaxed setting.
Buchan Caves Reserve
Afternoon
After lunch explore the incredible Buchan Caves Reserve, home to Victoria’s largest cave system. Take a guided tour through either the Fairy or Royal Cave to witness breathtaking limestone formations formed nearly 400 million years ago. The reserve also offers picnic areas, walking trails, and native wildlife sightings, making it a perfect afternoon escape.



Lake Tyers Beach Tavern
Late Afternoon
As evening approaches, head to the coastal village of Lake Tyers Beach for dinner at the Beach Tavern. Enjoy fresh meals, cold drinks, and live music in a laid-back setting with ocean views.
Lakes Entrance & Wyanga Park Winery
Evening
As the afternoon winds down, explore the local café scene. Grab a coffee or sweet treat at Bloody Good Coffee, Boatshed Food and Wine, Salty Groms, or Big Bears Donuts—each offering its own local charm.
In the evening, take a short drive to Wyanga Park Winery, a rustic family-run spot nestled between forest and lake. Enjoy hearty comfort food paired with casual wine tastings in a peaceful bushland setting.
For a perfect end to the day, immerse yourself in contrast therapy at Koho Sauna, where you can unwind in a wood-fired sauna with lake access, leaving you refreshed and recharged.



Funkey Monkey & Seashell Museum

Start your day in Lakes Entrance with a delicious breakfast at Funky Monkey, where fresh, house-made pastries and exceptional coffee set the tone for a relaxed morning. Just a short walk from the footbridge, this local gem offers a cozy spot to fuel up before exploring.
After breakfast, step into a world of oceanic wonder at the Griffiths Seashell Museum. A quirky, family-owned collection since 1962, the museum houses over 90,000 shells, unique sea creatures, and rare curiosities like a two-headed baby shark and goblin sharks.
Waterfront walk
Mid-Morning
Continue your morning with a self-guided stroll along the Esplanade, Myer Street, and Church Street, discovering historical landmarks like the Central Hotel, seafood markets such as Sodafish, and a variety of charming local shops, op shops, and family-friendly mini golf spots.
If you’re traveling with a furry friend, don’t miss the Brackenbush Unleashed Dog Park for a playful break.

Midday
By midday, make your way to The Minotaur, a vibrant seafood kiosk on the old slipway docks, part of the exciting new Slip Way Collective. Savor freshly prepared takeaway dishes as you overlook the serene waters of the lake.
After lunch, head to 90 Mile Beach for a tranquil walk along the expansive golden sands.
For more active fun, the local Lakes Entrance Aqua Park offers inflatable water attractions, or you can opt for a peaceful paddleboat ride on the calm lakes.

Evening
Finish the day with a peaceful stroll along Lake Tyers Beach, where the lake and ocean meet. If the timing is right, you might witness the lakes opening at high tide—a magical natural moment. This itinerary blends East Gippsland’s best coastal, country, and cultural experiences into one unforgettable day.
The General
Breakfast
Begin your day with a hearty breakfast at The General in Lake Tyers Beach, a café that prides itself on using fresh, local ingredients and serving some of the best coffee and food in East Gippsland. With its open-air downstairs dining and laid-back beachside vibe, it’s the perfect place to relax or gear up for a day of exploring. While you’re there, grab a local fishing and picnic map to make the most of your visit.
Red Bluff
Morning
After breakfast, take time to explore Lake Tyers Beach, where natural beauty meets adventure. Visit Red Bluff Surf Beach, a stunning coastal spot with reef breaks and rock pools, ideal for surfers and photographers alike.
For a more relaxed pace, head to Lake Tyers, with its calm, shallow waters perfect for families. Fishing enthusiasts will find plenty of off-the-beach spots, while wildlife lovers can enjoy the surrounding Lake Tyers State Park, home to wombats, lyrebirds, and other native species.
Nyerimilang Heritage Park
Morning
In the afternoon, make your way to Lakes Entrance and enjoy lunch at The Cove, located just across the footbridge. With its friendly service, waterfront views, and seasonal menu, it’s a delightful stop for a satisfying meal.
Afterwards, unwind with some souvenir shopping or relax by the water before heading to Nyerimilang Heritage Park.
This scenic, 179-hectare park features a 19th-century homestead, manicured gardens, and panoramic views of the Gippsland Lakes. Choose from various walking trails, including the Whistling Kite, Cliff Top, or Salt Marsh tracks, each offering a different perspective of the natural landscape.

As the sun sets, enjoy a fun round of mini golf at one of the many courses in Lakes Entrance — a great activity for all ages. End your day with dinner at Sea Shanty on Myer, a local bistro and wine bar known for its exceptional seafood, regional wines, and welcoming atmosphere. With vegetarian options and live music, it’s the perfect spot to relax and reflect on a day well spent.
Buchan beauty!
We don’t think you will ever have enough of Lakes Entrance and surrounds but when it’s time to move on, let’s head back to Buchan.
Buchan will bring you into the hills, a small rural community with some awesome opportunities for caving! The underground oasis here is incredible, and not to be missed.
The Buchan Caves reserve is a tranquil area complete with walking trails, local wildlife and a very cold running stream for anyone game enough to test the waters.
Hiking is aplenty in the Buchan region. Our favourites include Tulloch Ard Lookout Walk and Raymond Creek Falls.
