It’s shaping up to be a big weekend for lovers of historic cars with over 30 Austin

Healeys from around Victoria converging on Paynesville and East Gippsland on the 25th to 27th of August. The Austin Healey Owners Club of Victoria is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and is taking its celebrations on the road. Of the four events it is hosting in 2017, three are in regional centres.

‘‘The objective is to give regional members who through distance or time don’t have the opportunity to attend functions in Melbourne, a chance to take part,’’ club past president Paul McPherson said. An event has already been held in Torquay in February and Echuca in May, the third regional gathering will be held in Paynesville on the last weekend of August.

More than 30 Healeys are expected in the area for the weekend with the group basing itself at the Captains Cove Resort in Paynesville. There will be an informal dinner of participants at Pier 70 in Paynesville on the Friday evening.

Saturday will see these historic vehicles travel to Dargo to enjoy a lunch at the historic Dargo Hotel.

The official Club Dinner will be held on Saturday night at the Boathouse Restaurant in Paynesville.

A static display of the cars will be held along the Paynesville Foreshore carpark, adjacent to Progress Jetty from 10am until 12.30pm on Sunday, August the 28th. This will be a great opportunity for residents of the district to view these historic vehicles; Austin Healeys have a very rich history in racing and rallying throughout the world. Club owners will be on hand to discuss the virtues and history behind these cars. Organisers are hoping that any other Healey owners in the Gippsland region will make the journey to meet with likeminded enthusiasts for any part of this visit. Club President Terry Wade cordially invites any current or past Austin Healey owners to join the Club in this celebration. Owners of Austin Healey’s who wish to join the static display should present their vehicle to officials at the Progress Jetty car park in Paynesville between 9.15am and 9.45am on the Sunday Morning.

A large number of these Healeys recently undertook a run to the national gathering on the Gold Coast in Queensland.

The 50th Anniversary Regional Rally will see Austin Healeys start arriving in Paynesville from mid Friday.

‘‘We’re pretty pleased with the response so far,’’ Mr. Terry Wade said. ‘‘We’re looking forward to it. It should be a big weekend of cars and the club is proud to visit regional towns like Paynesville, the event is a positive economic stimulus for the region over this weekend and it gives local car enthusiasts the opportunity to see a wide range of vehicles from this historic marque.”

Mr. Wade encouraged gipplanders and locals who wanted to participate in any or all of the events to contact local Club Member Les Mathieson on 0418106725.
