From the great twists and turns of the Great Alpine Road to the cool coastal drives, there is a great road trip ahead for any motor cycle enthusiast who visits East Gippsland.
With the wind in your face and fantastic scenery all around, your two wheel experience has just begun. Replenish in small country towns with a drink or meal and then continue on your exploration of the back roads and lanes.
Motorbike riders should be aware of log trucks, caravans and boats on trailers as a regular traffic occurrence. If planning a trip to the Great Alpine Road in cooler months please check the weather conditions, you don’t want to ride into gale force winds, snow or ice. East Gippsland boasts an exciting range of cycling activities. Bring your bike, or hire one here and cycle through farmland, towering forests and coastal landscapes. From cycle trails such as the 90 km East Gippsland Rail Trail and the picturesque Gippsland Lakes Discovery Trail, to three superb Mountain Bike Parks, to road cycling routes and cycling events there is much on offer for you to experience.
Get on your bike and shred the 3 sets of great Mountain Bike Parks on offer in East Gippsland. The Colquhoun Mountain Bike Park just west of Lakes Entrance has both a cross country track and pump track.
The Mt Taylor Mountain Bike Park not far out of Bairnsdale has great tracks and has hosted Victorian championship titles. DH track starts off Tower Rd just below the communications tower. The Nowa Nowa Mountain Bike Park has 35km of trails, 20km of mountain bike trails and 15km of dual purpose tracks for walking and cycling. This bike park is family friendly for children above 6yrs of age.
Visit the underground splendour of stalactites and stalagmites in the Buchan Caves. A world of colour and enchantment below, you will marvel at the formations and maze of caves. Dating back over 300 million years, ancient
rivers flowing and seeping through limestone rock formed the Caves. Europeans first explored them in the early 1900’s.
The Fairy Cave presents a visual tapestry of rich limestone shapes and Royal Cave is noted for the calcite-rimmed pools. The Caves are fully lit with walkways. Guided tours are conducted daily in both. Tours to ‘wild’ caves can also be arranged for small groups. Stay right at the Caves Reserve above ground. Camp or stay in Cabins, or try the Wilderness Retreats for a mix of both. Wildlife like kangaroos, bellbirds & lyrebirds are commonly seen within the reserve.
When the temperature drops in Victoria’s high country, new adventures abound. Winter in the alpine region is a stylish and fun affair with plenty of places to ski, toboggan, snowboard or simply relax and enjoy all that premier skiing locations close to East Gippsland have to offer.
Mount Hotham provides some of the best downhill skiing in the Southern Hemisphere with black diamond runs to challenge the most expert skiers. Plenty for beginners too, with plenty of easy runs for you and the kids. Located in the Alpine National Park, Mt Hotham is just over a 2hr drive from Bairnsdale, with the turn off at Bruthen. Snow chains are required throughout the snow season. Accommodation and snow gear hire is available on the mountain.
Dinner Plain offers cross-country enthusiasts an abundance of trails to chose from. Dinner Plain is a great place to take the kids tobagganing their first time, with great beginners slopes to enjoy. Only 10kms Bairnsdale side of Mt Hotham you can enjoy the winter sights with magnificent snow gums nestled between the winter chalets. Snow chains must be carried throughout the snow season. Accommodation and snow gear hire is available on the mountain.
